Associate Professor Dr. med. Claus Berndhard Ablassmaier
The supreme goal of any surgical intervention is to avoid any unnecessary bodily stress and harm, and to initiate a quick convalescence. Since the early 90s the so-called keyhole surgery (minimally invasive surgery, MIS), has allowed surgical interventions in the body interior with a maximum protection of the surrounding tissue.
Only small cuts in skin and soft tissue are necessary to insert the surgical instruments into the area of the surgery. The surgeon is directed via a high-performance camera which transmits the pictures of the operating area to a monitor.
Since minimally invasive surgery – also called keyhole-surgery – was introduced I was fascinated by the approach and I decided to adopt it as my main field of work. As a board-certified surgeon, visceral, thoracic and vascular surgeon I specialize in minimally invasive surgery, which means, that I perform endoscopic and laparoscopic chest and abdominal surgery.

In the meantime, I have gained Prof. Dr. med. Samir Said, a long-time friend and colleague from the Charite' in Berlin, who has decisively contributed to the development of minimally invasive surgery worldwide.
My son Dr. med. Sven Ablassmaier has been working and operating according to the BICORN procedure for many years and is an integral part of our team.

Pioneering in the surgical field
Like most of the fields of medicine, minimally invasive surgery, too, is constantly being advanced. For one thing endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery is applied to a growing number of indications. Also the techniques are being refined, in order to achieve the optimal minimum of injuries and scars. Whenever possible, natural body orifices are used to carry out surgery in the body interior.
Today, for instance, it is possible to remove women’s gall bladders including gall stones, via the vagina. Cuts into skin or soft tissue are no longer necessary. I was among the pioneers of this surgery technique and I’m specialized in performing this gentle way of gall bladder removal.
